Local government elections

Chairmen and councillors are elected by each state's own State Independent Electoral Commission, on dates each commission sets. They are not part of INEC's timetable.

How results travel

  1. At the polling unit. Votes are counted in public. The figures go on the result sheet (Form EC8A), signed by the officials and party agents present, and a copy is posted at the unit for anyone to see.
  2. Uploaded. A photo of the sheet is uploaded to INEC's Result Viewing portal (IReV), where the public can view it.
  3. Collated upwards. Each unit's figures are added up at the ward, on Form EC8B, then at the local government and the state, each on its own collation form.
  4. Declared. The returning officer for each seat declares the result. Only INEC declares results.

Two terms worth knowing

Accredited voters

The number of voters checked in at the polling unit before voting. More votes cast than voters accredited is called over-voting.

Over-voting

When votes cast at a polling unit are more than the accredited voters there. Under the Electoral Act, the result of that unit is cancelled.
